In my 20+ years in the industry, I have consumed a lot of amazing interior design. Beautiful spaces, offices, and homes with gorgeous furnishings and perfect lighting. Every magazine cover, Instagram post, or coffee table book that caught my attention and drew me in to fantasize about being the kind of designer that creates award-winning rooms.
And I did that. I designed the beautiful, perfectly appointed homes. I won the awards--a lot of them. And I was so proud and felt like my life had purpose.
Then I got pregnant, and everything changed for me. Suddenly I no longer defined my life by my career, I had a new focus... this perfect tiny baby who needed all of my heart. Design changed for me too. It became less about helping the wealthy live more comfortably, and more about providing good design that is attainable for everyone. Because I believe everyone deserves good design.
At the risk of sounding too contrite, I'd like to quote Confucius: "Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it." I think it's my purpose on this earth to help people find the beauty in their own style and homes. Not just beauty, but comfortable, interesting, functional spaces that improve their lives. I want to make everyone live a more comfortable life, because the world is not good right now. We need a retreat at the end of the day.
Have a great day, best friends.
